The Cast

About

It's a common question, 'how do I get a cast or a wider cast on my dog?' Well you need to start with the foundations in the round yard or a smaller area as demonstrated earlier videos and then you can progress to this step. In this video Gary will take you through sending your dog left and right and the tips for getting a wider arc to allow the stock to stay settled. You'll learn how to develop a calm, wide and controlled cast that sets your dog up for success and creates quiet, manageable stock from the very first approach. By the end of this session, you'll be able to: ✅ Understand the purpose of the cast and why it is critical to successful stock work. ✅ Identify the key characteristics of a quality outrun: width, depth and control. ✅ Recognise when a dog is casting too narrow or too shallow. ✅ Use previous training foundations, such as sides and off-balance flanks, to improve casting performance. ✅ Develop a cast that keeps stock calm and responsive rather than reactive and fearful. ✅ Progressively refine your dog's outrun as distance and difficulty increase. ✅ Build greater trust between your dog and the stock it works.
